Under the direction of Travis Emery (Knight Sentry), the UCSA is a Historical European Martial Arts group and HEMA Alliance member practicing in Salt Lake City Utah. Although the majority of class time is spent learning medieval long sword techniques, students also explore areas of short sword, dagger, buckler, as well as unarmed fighting and defense. All weapons used in class are made of wood or a strong synthetic plastic. We practice with wooden wasters available through Purpleheart Armoury, but will supply wooden dowels or the use of a class weapon for anyone interested in joining or participating until their own waster is purchased. We prefer all participants use wooden wasters, or synthetic weapons, as they are weighted properly, are very strong, and are less likely to break in regular practice. The only wasters we allow to be used in class are those purchased through Purpleheart Armoury.

Class time is spent in practicing fighting one-on-one, warfare (group fighting), melee (everyone for themselves),  dagger activities,  grappling, as well as other drills and practice techniques.

The European Martial Arts form a unique system of self-defense skills, but as with any Martial Art, they can be dangerous. This is a contact class and as such, participants are encouraged to wear whatever protective equipment they deem prudent. That being said, metal armor is highly discouraged in regular in class activities.  For all members, mouth guards and eye protection are required. Athletic cups are required for all male participants, this gear is highly recommended for investigators as well. Lacrosse gloves are highly encouraged to prevent injury from hits to the hands, wrists, and fingers while also allowing sufficent flexibility. Fencing masks or helmets are also encouraged and can replace a mouth guard and eye protection only if the meshing in the front of the face is small enough that a sword point cannot penetrate it. In order to participate in class activities participants  must be at least 12 years of age.

Dues of $20 a month are accessed for all members. This fee includes beginning class uniforms once rank is given(tunic and sash), and needed class materials. The first 4 weeks are free so everyone is welcome to try it out before they join.
